Design of the ASSESSMAKE21 tool is underway!

Happy to inform you that our first important task, the design of the ASSESSMAKE21 tool, is well underway!

The last four months CIL (leader of O1) with contributions from the project partners mapped out and formulated the journey that the students will traverse with the ASSESSMAKE21 tool to learn, develop and reflect upon 21st century skills during their activities in the makerspaces.

The design was based on –

1) literature review on frameworks for 21st-century skills,

2) feedback that was elicited from project partners, educators/teachers and facilitators of makerspaces from 4 countries (Cyprus, Ireland, Greece and Sweden) through several design thinking workshops, and,

3) a series of in-depth interviews with researchers, teachers and practitioners in the aforementioned countries.

The ASSESSMAKE21 tool focuses on the 21st century skills that were brought most frequently forward during the data collection stage, namely: Collaboration, Creativity, Communication, Problem-Solving and Life/Social skills. Through the interviews and the design thinking workshops data were retrieved that allowed the project team to determine the technical and functional requirements underpinning the ASSESSMAKE21 tool. Annotated wireframes, user flow diagrams and an interactive prototype were designed; all these outputs inform the next project stage which is the ASSESSMAKE21 tool development.

Leo Scarff Joins Our Multiplier Event

It is a great honour to have Leo Scarff, co-founder of Fab Lab Maker Hub, as guest speaker at our first virtual multiplier event in Ireland on the 28th of January.

Through his speech entitled “Fab Labs and Digital Making in Schools he will introduce us in the magical world of makerspaces. He will share his experiences and views related to running STEAM workshops for children and bringing digital making and design thinking into primary and secondary schools in the North West of Ireland.

About Leo

Leo Scarff is the co-founder of the Fab Lab Maker Hub, a digital fabrication facility based in Manorhamilton in the North West of Ireland. Fab Lab Maker Hub was established in 2014 to bring street level access to desktop manufacturing technology and to kick start Maker Education and hands-on STEAM workshops in the North West and beyond. The focus of the Fab Lab is to engage with schools, libraries, small businesses, entrepreneurs and anyone curious about making with digital technology and prove that everyone can be a Maker. MakerHub Manager Stuart Lawn and Leo have developed Makerspaces for local libraries and arts organisations and run regular workshops on 3D Printing, Laser Cutting, Physical Computing, Product and CAD Design. As well as running his own design company since 1997, Leo has lectured on product design since 1999 and is a Design & Crafts Council of Ireland mentor in product design for the North West of Ireland

Design Thinking Workshops

Our Cypriot project partners, Cyprus Interaction Lab kick starts the first project output with a series of design thinking workshops. These workshops aim to implement user requirements collected from key stakeholders, in order to shape the functionality of the ASSESSMAKE 21 platform and more closely meet use needs.
